Filipino American Heritage Month
We celebrated another year of Filipino American Heritage month in Mark St. Orlando Florida. Few leaders of the different organizations and their members joined together to celebrate this important event. I can’t help to noticed that there are many empty seats. This event was planned ahead of time and its surprising to me not to see many Filipinos there to celebrate this important event. Anyway I hope those who attended this year will come back next year.
Filipino American Heritage Month history began on October 18, 1587. Filipinos were the first Asians to cross the Pacific Ocean as early as 1587, fifty years before the first English settlement of Jamestown was established. From 1565 to 1815, during the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade, Filipinos were forced to work as sailors and navigators on board Spanish Galleons.
Filipino American Heritage Month-because Florida is without a doubt a major destination for luxury cruise ships, those who work in them are primarily Filipino, thus making the Sunshine State as a primary destination for both Filipino tourists and immigrants.
We’ve been invisible for a while in the shadows of our Pacific Islander friends.we would like to convey to our friends and neighbors that there is more to being Filipino than food. lumpia and pancit.
We want to be able to tell our friends and family, and acquaintances that we have a unique and exceptional Asian Pacific Islander heritage. A heritage that reflects our true pinoy heritage . A heritage that goes deeply into the hearts of all Pinoys, whether we speak English or Tagalog, whether we were born in America or the Philippines, or whether we eat “kare-kare” and “pinakbet”, or hamburgers and French fries.
Do you know that we love to dance too, even though few us can’t dance like me, hey what’s most important is that we are having fun. Please click the link below to see the entire video of the event. As you can see its well attended by those who know how to dance .
Those of you who did not show up , dont know what you miss. Come next year for the celebration of Filipino American Heritage Month.
